Biography

Dr. SARUWATARI Yasufumi is a professor of Operations Research, the Executive Officer for Collaborative Research, and the Director of Office of University Management Reform at University of Tsukuba in Japan. He received the Bachelor of Engineering in 1987 from Tokyo University of Science, Japan, Master degree in 1989 and Doctor degree in 1993 from the same institute. He worked with the National Defense Academy, Japan, as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1997. Since 1997, he has been with the Faculty of Business Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan, as an Associate Professor, and a Professor. From 2012 to 2015, he was appointed to serve as an Executive Officer and a Dean of the University. From 2016 to 2017, he was a President’s advisor and a member of Office for Corporate Strategy. Since 2018, he has been the Director of Office of University Management Reform. He has been appointed to serve as an Executive Officer for Collaborative Research since 2019. He teaches Operations Research course at the Graduate School of Business Sciences. The school provides with practical and advanced programs for working business professionals. He is interested in mathematical optimization, and applications of Operations Research methodologies to the real world problems, which include the issues arising from hospital, supply chain, and sports management. He is carrying out research projects with researchers from marketing science, finance and the other research fields. He has published books in Japanese, and papers in Journal of Operations Research Society of Japan, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Information, European Journal of Operational Research and the other leading journals of Operations Research. He is a member of Mathematical Optimization Society, the Operations Research Society of Japan, Japan Industrial Management Association, and Japanese Association for Sports Management. He received the Best Case Study Award in 2004 from the Operations Research Society of Japan, and was the chairperson of the editorial boards of the Journal “Communications of the Operations Research Society of Japan” from 2014 to 2019.
